Jacksonville was selected by the Department of Veterans Affairs as the site for a new national cemetery, to be located north of downtown, near the Jacksonville International Airport. Phase 1 of the 525-acre site will support up to 7,500 gravesites for casket interments, a 4,500 niche columbarium and 500 in-ground sites for cremated remains, along with administration, visitor and maintenance facilities.  The site, which is flat and low, presents numerous design challenges, from engineering the placement of thousands of pre-cast crypts, to providing a landscape aesthetic congruent with a national shrine.  A multi-phased 100-year project build-out is anticipated which will provide for more than 100,000 burial sites.
