The completion of a major widening project in St. Johns County was celebrated Thursday.
County officials conducted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of the Longleaf Pine Parkway Widening project. This $15.1 million project widened over 4 miles of roadway from Roberts Road to Veterans Parkway and included a new traffic signal at Shetland Drive.
According to a release, the project was paid for entirely by developer funding and was completed before the planned development was added to the area.
The development in the area is Pinewalk. It was first approved as Greenbriar Helow. It includes 3,500 homes and 2.5 million square feet of non-residential uses.
The plan is for 2,275 single-family homes and 1,225 multi-family homes. The development would be on about 2,200 acres located north and south of Greenbriar Road, east and west of Longleaf Pine Parkway, and west of Veterans Parkway.
“The developer’s contribution demonstrates a model partnership," Commissioner Christian Whitehurst said in the release. "One that aligns with our county’s vision for responsible growth and development."
England-Thims & Miller (ETM) was the civil engineer team on the project, with C.W. Matthew Contracting Co. Baker Division leading construction.
