State Road 50 Widening & Reconstruction

ETM provided Construction, Engineering, and Inspection services on SR 50 from Hernando/Sumter County Line to East of CR 478A project in Sumter County. The project involved widening the existing two-lane roadway to a four-lane configuration with a grass median, significantly increasing capacity and improving traffic flow.

Key features of the project include:

  • Roadway Expansion: The construction of dual 12’ wide travel lanes in each direction, providing ample space for vehicles and improving overall road safety.
  • Shoulder Enhancements: The addition of 5’ wide paved shoulders alongside each travel lane, providing safer options for emergency stops and enhancing roadway infrastructure.
  • Bridge Construction: The development of a new two-lane bridge adjacent to the existing structure over the Little Withlacoochee River, designed to accommodate the increased traffic while preserving the integrity of the surrounding environment.
  • Pedestrian and Cyclist Infrastructure: The creation of a 12’ wide shared-use path along the south side of SR 50, fostering greater accessibility and encouraging alternative forms of transportation.

The comprehensive design and construction of this project not only catered to the immediate transportation needs of the local community but also laid the groundwork for future development and prosperity in Sumter County.

The success of the SR 50 project from the Hernando/Sumter County line to the east of CR 478A was largely attributed to the cooperation and partnership among all parties involved. The Contractor, Consultant, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) worked in close alignment, ensuring that any project-related issues were addressed promptly and effectively at the most practical level. Project limits were adjusted to prevent any rework and additional costs to the FDOT.
